Position Paper

Our position for the new amendment that we are proposing is that we need to change the electoral vote to popular vote. Having a popular vote is more helpful because having electoral doesn’t make every single vote count because it is won by state, so if you are in a state that is mostly republican the other side’s vote doesn’t count. By changing the way that the president is decided to popular vote every individual in the country votes count. We feel that it isn’t a complete democracy because if everyone was to have a say, how come electoral colleges only choose The President of the United States?

Democracy derives form the word dēmokratia and if you break it down demos means “the people” and kratia means “power, rule”. Democracy literally translates to the people power or the people rule. Yet in our city that is named democracy the people don’t have the power that they should deserve. What we believe in is that the people should have the power and the person who is running the country shouldn’t restrict it.

In electoral most people don’t vote because of how if ones state is all republican or all democrat and their point of view is on another side but because of the fact that you know that your vote wont count that individual wont vote at all. Which means there are hundreds of people who are not even going to bother to vote. Electoral has made certain people’s votes not count so most people don’t even bother to vote anymore. Let’s refer back to the George Bush and Al gore election. When it came down to the day of election most of the people were very upset at the outcome. George Bush had won the electoral votes and Al Gore. Everyone was so disappointed at who became president because in the popular vote Al Gore clearly had more votes. Ever since he became president rumors have been going around that he has only be doing things to get oil and his family happens to own an oil company. These decisions he made had nothing to do with the people.

The people should have the power to pick the president that they will do what the people need, the president should actually take care of the people. This can only be done by popular vote. If a tie was to come about we would then go to electoral and ties happening would be very rare. If this amendment was to be passed every vote would be counted and it wouldn’t be negated because of the state that they are in such as Texas or Florida.

Rebuttal

Why do we want a Popular vote?
Popular vote is important because everyone’s vote no matter what state you’re in your vote will count. In College Electoral most people don’t vote because of how their states are so one sided. When this happens people don’t even bother voting for their side when it’s not going to matter because of what the College Electoral does.
What would be more useful are more people to voting. Statistics show that ¬¬¬¬52 % of people vote now, but if popular vote were in effect percentage would clearly rise. The more people that vote the more we know who the country really wants as President.
An example was how the 2000 Election went how Al Gore won the popular vote, and Bush won the College Electoral. This over all left a lot of people upset, because even though Al Gore was favored Bush still won and look where that got us. Having a College Electoral might get the President we don’t want.
Who will this help?
This will help everyone that is in a one sided state. An example is how California is a very Democratic state. Because of that this most Republicans in the state wont even bother to vote because they’re vote wont count. So almost every Republican won’t even bother to vote. This works both ways and doesn’t really help anyone. If you look at the bigger picture this helps everyone in the US because the right president was elected and the country as well as the world will benefit from it.
What do we do on a tiebreak?
The chances of a tiebreak are very slim but if this ever were to happen the College Electoral would be the final tiebreak.
What’s wrong with College Electoral?
Not enough people are voting in each state. Because of this it makes it less about what the country wants. If you’re in a classroom and want majority vote what good is it if only 3 or 4 people vote out of 30? It’s not an accurate assessment.
Why College Electoral doesn’t want Popular Vote.
The reason why most people might want to have an electoral vote is because popular vote can be very unfair for certain smaller states. For example, states like California or New York they’re votes count for more because it has high population density as opposed to other low population density such as Wyoming, or Montana.
But each state in a College Electoral are weighed so popular vote wouldn’t be any different. BUT having popular vote includes every single voter in the US. It shouldn’t be about what a majority of the people want but just what the people want.
